Lionel Messi has been on the phone to Lautaro Martinez and “wants him by his side soon” at Barcelona, according to the man who discovered the striker at former club Racing.

Adrian Ruben Fernandez, the president of youth football at the Argentinian club, has been talking to Sport about speculation the Inter Milan man will move to the Camp Nou.

“Messi called him and wants him by his side soon, I have no doubt. For that reason, the deal to sign him is almost there.

“I know things will go well in Barcelona and that Lautaro will be an excellent replacement for Suarez. He’s the ideal heir. Thanks to Barça he will continue to grow as a player and a man.”

Fernandez went on to say that he thinks Lautaro “has the same qualities as Sergio Aguero” and he believes playing with Messi will help him “even better.”

Messi has already made it clear he’d be happy for Barcelona to sign Martinez. He described the Inter man as “spectacular” in an interview with Mundo Deportivo last week.
