Frank Lampard spoke about a number of issues after Chelsea’s 6-0 trashing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. Here’s some of what the Blues boss said.
On the omissions of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger
“They’re not in the squad – that’s just a choice at the moment. With the centre-halves, I can’t have them all in the squad at the moment.
“I keep getting questions about the size of the squad. Yes, there might be movement (out). We know that.
“But nothing is concrete, so don’t read too much into those selections at the minute.
“It (any departures) will have to be things that are right for the club, individuals and me.”
On Kai Havertz’s hat-trick
“I’m delighted with Kai. It was everything I wanted the night to be.
“Kai has had no pre-season. This was a great exercise for him to see how we want him to work off the ball and be part of that.
“We also want him to have some freedom on the ball. The way he linked with Tammy and got his goals – it was a great night for Kai and the first of many.”
“We talk about work ethic, which he showed really well in terms of getting the ball back for us, recovery runs, all the things which must be absolutely standard in his game.”
On Callum Hudson-Odoi’s display
“He did well. It’s not easy with not so many minutes, he is the same as some others in the same boat at the moment. At parts he looked fresh and sharp.
“He showed loads of great moments. I was really pleased with Callum. He had a good night.”
On Chelsea’s attacking options
“It’s a good problem. It gives me strikers with different attributes and all competitive in a good way.
“It gives me different options from last year, for sure.”
On Thiago Silva
“It’s exciting for us. He’s had just over a week’s training and it was a perfect 60 minutes for him tonight.
“He showed the qualities he has. He also gave us something in the dressing room and on the pitch – a leader of authority in terms of what he demands of others.
“He doesn’t speak the language, but at the minute that’s not a problem because of his presence and the way he commands people around him.”
On Edouard Mendy
“The medical I think is done. I think it’s complete.
“I want to be a bit careful with that because I don’t want to give confirmation until I see him, possibly in the next 24 hours.”
