Dutch giants Ajax have been denied the Eredivisie title after it was confirmed there would be no 2019/20 league champions in the Netherlands.

Last season’s Champions League semi-finalists lead the table on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar with nine league matches left to be played.

However, whilst some leagues have opted to cancel their leagues and freeze the league table, Ajax have been told they will not be crowned champions.

This sets a bad precedent for English clubs such as Liverpool, who lead the Premier League by 25 points, and Leeds United, who are top of the Championship table and hopeful of a return to the Premier League.

Equally, ADO Den Haag and RKC Waalwijk, who currently reside in the Eredivisie relegation zone, will not be relegated from the top-tier of Dutch football, which could come as welcome news to Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City.

Coronavirus is having an impact across sport in Europe, with football league schedules suspended in several countries, including in England, Spain and Italy. But what happens next?

  – The Champions League and Europa League have been suspended, and UEFA have confirmed details on what could happen next.

  – The Premier League clubs have also met to discuss the way forward and how to end the season.

  – Other leagues across Europe are also currently suspended, but some are at different stages of planning for the return of football.

  – Decisions have been made regarding the National League and other non-league football.

  – We asked the fans what they want to see happen, following the suspension of football in the Premier League. Here’s what they said.

This is the first example in European football of these decisions being taken, with Belgian football opting to end their season but award runaway league-leaders Club Brugge the title.

The Premier League and EFL remain committed to completing the 2019/20 season.

UEFA have also again this week reiterated their intention to finish the Champions League and Europa League.
